Discovery of Unique Atomic Arrangement in Uranium Compound
Researchers from the University of Texas at Dallas, led by Dr.

Researchers from the University of Texas at Dallas, led by Dr. Mengke Liu, have uncovered a novel atomic arrangement in uranium oxytelluride (UOTe), revealing a chiral superlattice that bestows the material with exceptional magnetic properties. This breakthrough could pave the way for advancements in electronic and computer memory technologies. The findings, shared in the journal Nature on October 7, stemmed from Liu’s exploration of the uranium compound, provided by collaborator Dr. Sheng Ran from Washington University in St. Louis.
Using advanced microscopy techniques, Liu discovered a repeating twisted atomic structure that influences electron behavior, exhibiting both ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic characteristics. This combination offers new possibilities for faster and more resilient memory devices. The research emphasizes the need for reevaluating existing materials with modern tools, potentially opening new avenues in material science.
