A Historical Look at Crucial White Sox Games

Ken Griffey Jr.'s iconic double play remains a high point in the White Sox's must-win moments.

Flashback: Must-win White Sox games

Ken Griffey Jr.’s iconic double play remains a high point in the White Sox’s must-win moments. Up until now, the White Sox have only played in one decisive playoff game, losing 6-4 to Oakland in the 2020 Wild Card Series. Additionally, there have been at least three vital regular-season games that directly impacted their postseason chances. As we prepare for a critical do-or-die matchup in this year’s ALDS Game 5, it’s worth revisiting these significant games in team history.

On October 6, 1908, the White Sox faced the Detroit Tigers and suffered a 7-0 defeat in their season finale, which capped a three-game do-or-die stretch. A couple of wins over Detroit earlier in the series kept their pennant hopes alive until the final day. Fast forward nearly a century to September 30, 2008, where the White Sox battled the Minnesota Twins in a classic tiebreaker game that they won, securing a postseason berth. Their most recent do-or-die game, the 2020 Wild Card matchup, was marred by controversy as they fell to the Athletics. With one postseason win versus three losses in such crucial games, the upcoming challenge holds significant weight for the White Sox.
