‘A win-win for everybody': North Dallas businesses welcome potential Mavs arena

As the Dallas Mavericks gear up for their season opener in Houston, there’s a growing sense of anticipation in North Dallas regarding the team’s prospective new arena. In June, the Mavericks revealed plans for an arena and entertainment district at the former Valley View Mall site, situated near Preston Road and LBJ Freeway, with a possible move starting in the 2031 season.

Local business owners are optimistic about the prospects of an NBA team nearby. Anthony Blaylock, the owner of Big Tony’s Cheesesteaks in the Preston Village shopping center, noted the potential for increased foot traffic and community vibrancy, especially as the area seeks to recover from the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. “It’s going to be a big boom for this area,” Blaylock remarked, highlighting the need for revitalization. The Mavericks are currently in the process of rezoning the 112-acre property, a significant step in the ambitious multibillion-dollar project, though completion remains years away.
