The Dallas City Council has reached a unanimous decision to ceremonially rename the Houston Street Bridge, a historic structure over a century old, in honor of Pettis Norman, a celebrated former Dallas Cowboys player, civil rights advocate, and business leader. The bridge will bear Norman’s name along the segment connecting Young Street to Zang Boulevard.
This decision followed a gathering of supporters, including NFL Hall of Famer Joe Greene, who praised Norman’s enduring impact on the community. Greene emphasized that Norman’s legacy extended beyond football, highlighting his metaphorical bridge-building for those in need. Norman, recognized for advocating racial equality during his playing days, continued his civil rights work as a prominent community leader after his football career. His wife, Ivette Norman, hopes the bridge’s new name will inspire future generations to learn about his significant contributions to Dallas.
