Researcher Seeks Cause of Gender Gap in Hearing Loss

Dr. Bohua Hu, a researcher at the University of Texas at Dallas, is delving into the reasons behind gender differences in hearing loss, having recently published a preclinical study in Hearing Research. This study identifies a genetic mutation that influences stress responses in the inner ear, using rodent models to illustrate how hearing loss may present differently across sexes.

Hu, a professor in the School of Behavioral and Brain Sciences, noted significant differences between males and females in their hearing sensitivities and responses to ailments affecting the auditory system. The study investigated the impact of the Slc16a5 gene, affecting sensory hair cells vital for hearing. The findings highlight early-onset hearing loss in female subjects, showcasing the complexity of sex-based auditory health disparities and the need for further research into underlying mechanisms.
