Mavericks Decide Against Extending Dereck Lively II’s Contract

The Dallas Mavericks have chosen not to extend Dereck Lively II’s contract ahead of the rookie-scale extension deadline. Consequently, if a new agreement is not reached, he will enter restricted free agency following the 2026-27 season.
This decision may seem surprising given Lively’s impressive performance as a rookie, where he emerged as a key player contributing to the team’s NBA Finals appearance. He was even selected for the All-Rookie team, showing promise as a foundational center for the Mavericks. However, his availability has been limited due to injuries, notably playing only 36 games in the 2024-25 season and just seven last year before undergoing foot surgery. Lively remains rehabilitating at the start of this season, which factored into the Mavericks’ choice.
While the team recognizes Lively’s potential, extending a significant multi-year contract after two seasons marred by health issues poses a considerable risk. On the flip side, if he regains his form and performs well, the Mavericks may regret passing on an early extension. Fortunately for Dallas, as a restricted free agent, they maintain the option to match any external offers, allowing them to retain him even if other teams are interested.
