'Chopped' champion opens Pan-Latin restaurant at Oak Cliff's East Dock

Barro y Fuego, a chef-driven Pan-Latin restaurant, has recently opened its doors at East Dock in Oak Cliff, specifically at suite 100 of the revamped historic building located at 900 E. Clarendon Dr. This new establishment joins a lively array of nearby dining options, including Bite Sushi and Elevate Coffee.

The restaurant is a collaboration between friends Robert Ramirez and Eric Spigner. Spigner brings experience from his time as chef at Nova Oak Cliff, which received the 2018 Restaurant of the Year award from CultureMap, and he is recognized as the 2021 Food Network Chopped champion. Ramirez, a veteran in restaurant design, played a significant role in the development of East Dock, which also houses retail and office spaces. The name ‘Barro y Fuego,’ meaning ‘clay and fire,’ represents their culinary vision, featuring a menu with customizable shareable plates inspired by various Latin American cultures.

The tasteful interior designed with a rustic cantina feel includes decor from Peru and Mexico. An open kitchen invites guests to watch the cooking process, while seating accommodates up to 160 diners both indoors and on an outdoor patio. Weekday offerings provide affordable dishes under $20, catering to local professionals and visitors. The weekend brunch, accompanied by live Latin jazz, features dishes such as ropa vieja and a unique pork belly Benedict, along with a well-curated drink menu that showcases Latin American beer and specialty cocktails.

The restaurant aims to foster community engagement by hosting events like paella nights and live music performances in the future.
