Southern Methodist University (SMU) revealed on Thursday that it will establish a men’s lacrosse program, set to commence play in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) in spring 2028. This initiative marks the first Division I men’s lacrosse team in Texas and the first new varsity sport at SMU since the introduction of women’s equestrian in 2003.
SMU Athletic Director Damon Evans remarked on the significance of this development, stating that it represents a historic moment for both the university and the sport. The Mustangs will join an elite group of programs, becoming the sixth men’s lacrosse team in the ACC alongside established teams such as Duke and North Carolina. The addition will help the ACC secure an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. SMU has already raised $15 million towards their $25 million funding goal for the program.
