State Funding for Private Schools Fuels Growth of Christian Education in Texas

Taxpayers are funding private school tuition. It's helping Christian schools expand

Keith Castello, an administrator at a classical Christian school, has been actively seeking potential locations for new Christian schools under the Texas sun. He cites an increase in demand that he attributes to a new state initiative providing taxpayer funding for families choosing Christian education.

This summer, Texas initiated a $1 billion public funding program for private education, enabling eligible families to use state money for schooling. This move reflects a broader national trend, where half of school-age children are now eligible for similar funding. This funding has raised significant concerns regarding the implications for church-state separation and the impact on public schools, which serve diverse student populations.

Castello, who is launching three new schools this fall, is part of the Association of Classical Christian Schools (ACCS), which aims to expand this educational model nationwide. Critics express that such funding could drain resources from public schools. Nonetheless, advocates believe it provides opportunities for families who previously found private education unaffordable, leading to significant expansions in Christian educational institutions.
