Tesla’s self-driving Cybercabs, currently operational in Austin, are slated to hit the streets of Dallas soon. On October 10, Ashok Elluswamy, Tesla’s vice president of AI software, indicated on the X social media platform that Cybercabs would arrive in Dallas in the near future, although no specific timeline was provided.
Cybercabs, designed exclusively for driverless ride-hailing, notably lack conventional driving controls including a steering wheel, gas pedal, and brake pedal. In contrast, the Model Y Robotaxi, which has been present in Dallas since this spring, features traditional driving fixtures and can accommodate more passengers. Current registrations in Texas show 319 Cybercabs and 420 Robotaxis. The Cybercab also has distinct design elements such as a striking golden exterior and butterfly doors, while the Robotaxi maintains a more conventional look. Moreover, the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA) has initiated investigations related to the Cybercab’s certification and reports of them exceeding speed limits in school zones.
